Summary

Two of our Glessner House docents, Marilyn Scott and Stuart Miller,  will be leading the Glessner House docents on an in depth tour of one of our neighbors in the South Loop-Second Presbyterian Church.  They are both  docents of Friends of Historic Second, a group formed to help maintain and restore this wonderful work of art.  We hope that you will plan to join them on an hour tour of this wonderful structure so that the next time you have visitors to Glessner House who are looking for other spaces to see in the South Loop that you can share a little information with them and encourage them to visit.

Second Presbyterian Church is an active congregation in the South Loop, but it is more than that, it is a work of art!  It is a National Historic Landmark located just a short distance from Glessner House.  It is the only National Historic Landmark church in Chicago. The architect of the church was James Renwick Jr., who was also the architect of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City and the Castle Building on the grounds of the Smithsonian. At the turn of the century, the church suffered a gaslight fire which destroyed much of the interior including the sanctuary but the exterior survived mostly intact.  A young architect, Howard Van Doren Shaw, who was a resident of Calumet Avenue and member of the church, was commissioned to recreate the interior and he chose to recreate it in the Arts and Crafts style. Today it is one of the most intact Arts and Crafts interiors in the country.  In addition to the Arts and Crafts interior, the sanctuary boasts nine Tiffany stained glass windows, many which were donated as memorials by Prairie Avenue residents.  It is also home to two rare Edward Burne-Jones windows.  We hope that you will join Marilyn and Stuart for a tour of this amazing space!!
